Best US Credit Cards in November 2024

Credit cards offer lucrative rewards, lengthy promotional APRs on purchases and balance transfers, welcome offers, and favourable terms. However, when evaluating the best credit cards, it is essential to look at your own spending habits and financial goals. So, before examining your credit score, establish how you will use the cards and what you want to achieve.

Your credit score determines which cards you qualify for. For instance, a score of 700 or higher will allow you to get a rewards card with some perks and a promotional interest rate.

You can check your credit score with some of the issuers, but it may carry a fee. Some may include your free FICO score in your online account if you already have a credit card. Review your report to check for any items that might hold down your score, including errors or high balances.

Your behaviour will likely establish which cards are best for you. Will you pay the card off every month or carry the balance? Will you use it for sundries or only for emergencies?

Knowing your behaviours and applying for the cards in practice will help you narrow down your options.

Best Cash Back Cards

They offer a rebate in the form of a dollar amount, which the client can spend however they like. On top of this, they are flexible, simple, and come with extra rewards like free dining and reduced fees.

  • Annual Fee: None
  • Credit Limit: Based on credit score
  • Purchase Rate: From 13.99%
  • Perks: No annual fee; no cash back cap; 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 18 months

Best for: Cardholders who enjoy a simple cash back mechanism

This nifty card has a simple cash back structure on all purchases, with a long-lasting 0% intro APR offer. There’s no annual fee, making it perfect for shoppers who don’t want to spend too much time figuring out how to make the most of a reward system. Cash holders earn 2% cash back on purchases: 1% on purchases and 1% cash back as you pay for them. Rewards are redeemable from $25, but you can convert as little as $1 in cash rewards to ThankYou Points. In other words, cash back rewards are endless.

Keep in mind that if you transfer a balance, interest will be charged on your purchases. That is unless you pay for your entire balance by the due date every month. There is a balance transfer fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer.

On the downside, there is a foreign transaction fee and the balance transfer fee. Also, there aren’t many additional benefits other than the cashback rewards. There is also no introductory free APR on purchases, which many other cards offer, too.

  • Earn 2% cash back for purchases
  • Unlimited cash back (no reward caps)
  • No annual fee
  • Foreign transaction fees and the balance transfer fees

  • Annual Fee: None
  • Credit Limit: Variable depending on Credit Score
  • Purchase Rate: From 13.99%
  • Perks: Boosted cash back rates; no annual fees; Museums on Us feature

Best for: Preferred Rewards members at the Platinum tier or higher

This card has a caveat: If you are not a Bank of America Preferred Rewards program member on the Platinum tier and up, this might not be the best card for you. For example, your cashback rate is 1.5%, which is decent but far from the best.

But, if you are a Bank of America client with good balances in your checking or investment accounts, this card is invaluable. The Preferred Rewards program will boost your flat rate up to 2.62%, by far one of the best flat-rate cash back offers on the market.

Depending on your relationship with Bank of America, this card can be highly lucrative. The minimum flat rate of 1.5% cash back on all purchases is average and comparable to many other rewards-based cards out there. In fact, the card works well if you are looking for simple, consistent rewards, despite plenty of cards (including the Citi Double Cash Card, also on this list) offering 2% back.

Bank of America customers, however, can take advantage of the Preferred Rewards program to get a 25-75% boost on their Unlimited Cash Rewards cashback rate.

Gold Tier members with a $20000 minimum balance receive a 1.87% cash back rate with a 25% boost; Platinum tier members with a $50000 minimum balance receive a 50% boost and 2.25% cash back rate, and the Platinum Honors tier with a $100000 minimum balance receive a 75% boost resulting in a 2.62% cash back rate.

Furthermore, if you choose this card, you are eligible for a sign-up bonus of $200 online cash rewards when you spend $1000 in the first 90 days. And there’s no annual fee, so no membership cost.

You will enjoy 15 billing cycles of APR on new purchases and balance transfers made within the first 60 days, after which the variable APR is a reasonable 13.99% to 23.99%. Additional benefits include the Museums on Us feature that gives you free admission to 225 cultural institutions on the first weekend of every month.

The Bank of America offers pre-approval on the card on its website, so you can test your odds of approval before applying.

  • Boost feature for Preferred Rewards members
  • Zero annual fees
  • $200 online cash rewards if you spend $1000 in the first 90 days
  • Cash back rate is 1.5% for members below the Platinum tier

  • Credit Limit: Variable depending on credit score
  • Purchase Rate: Variable
  • Perks: $200 cash bonus if you spend $500 in the first three months; no annual fees; 0% APR on new purchases for the first 15 months

Best for: Users who prefer low-maintenance cash back rewards and need to pay off large, new purchases over time

This low-maintenance card makes it onto the list because it is the most straightforward, least restrictive cashback card. If you aren’t the type of credit card holder who likes to juggle cards or pour time into credit card management, this is the best choice for you. The value of the card lies in simplicity rather than maximizing rewards through strategizing.

The Quicksilver Card offers $200 to new cardholders who spend $500 in the first three months. That is half the Bank of America Unlimited Cash Rewards Credit Card requirement. It is also a solid offer compared to cards like the SavorOne Cash Rewards and Chase Freedom Flex.

The card has the edge when it comes to convenience. The cashback never expires; rewards are redeemable at any time and through multiple channels, including statement credits, checks, gift cards, and more.

Log into the Capital One Purchase Eraser and apply your cash back as credits to delete purchases as far back as three months. It is a seamless function and easy to execute.

Moreover, you have the option to set up automatic redemption. However, to set it up, you have to call a representative first. The downside is that you are not going to earn Capital One miles on this one.

If you like paying off purchases over time, this card is a safe option. There is a 0% introductory APR on new purchases for the first 15 months. And there is no APR intro on balance transfers, as well. Consequently, you will be hard-pressed to pay off any existing debt.

On that note, the costs of paying off debts are high, with a 3% fee, and you will start accruing interest with a variable APR of 25.49%. Late payments could receive a penalty of up to $40.

Still, this card is perfect for frequent travellers. There is no foreign transaction fee, and there are several travel protections in place, including 24-hour travel assistance, extended warranties, premier access to selected events, and CreditWise monitoring. CreditWise offers free email alerts that help you keep track of your credit scores—a somewhat unique feature of this card. Capital One scores high in customer service, too, which is always something good to have in the back of your mind.

  • Zero foreign transaction fees
  • Low-maintenance reward system
  • Convenient Purchase Eraser online
  • After 15 months debts accrue a variable APR of 25.49%

Best for: Cash in your pocket and perks for foodies

This is a great cashback card, with perks for dining and entertainment included. It offers 3% cash back for many purchases, such as streaming services and groceries.

There is no annual fee, and you can earn 8% cash back on Vivid Seats tickets by January 2023. There is also a 15-month 0% APR.

Rewards are straightforward. There are no rotating categories or sign-ups needed to earn cash rewards, and there’s no earnings limit, as well.

Cardholders won’t have to pay foreign transaction fees either, and there is a $200 cash bonus once you’ve spent $500. If you are a foodie and carrying a balance is not an exciting thought, the SavorOne Card could be for you!

But since we do not live in a perfect world, the APR is steep, with a maximum of over 25%.

  • Zero foreign transaction fees
  • Generous 3% cash back on ordinary purchases
  • No annual fees
  • 25% APR

Our Verdict

If you are looking for a cashback card with low maintenance and great rewards, the Citi Double Cash Back or the two cards from Capital One are your best bets. All three cards will be good for paying off large purchases over time, with fair APRs following the introductory period. Travelling enthusiasts will enjoy the most benefits with the Quicksilver card, while concertgoers and sports fans should opt for the 8% cash back from Capital One SavorOne.

By far, the best rewards come from Bank of America. However, to take advantage of the Unlimited Rewards card, you have to be a member of Bank of America.

Best Low-Interest Cards

Low-interest cards carry purchases, balance transfers, and other APRs that fall below the industry norm. They are great for cardholders that like to carry a balance from month to month. A low-interest card makes the difference if you need to keep your accounts in check.

  • Purchase Rate: From 11.99%
  • Perks: 5% cash back on bonus categories up to $1500; sign-up bonus matches your cash back; zero annual fees

Best for: Credit card users who need low-interest rates

The Discover it Cashback Card offers real value to savvy shoppers, but it does take some strategizing to take full advantage of its benefits. The bonus categories rotate regularly, and rewards are redeemable as gift cards (from $5 increments), donations, credit, direct deposit, or payment at selected stores.

The best thing is that Discover announces its cashback calendar in advance so that cardholders can plan their year. If you can stay on top of the rotating categories and shift your spending, you can probably get 1.58% back on your purchases.

You can earn 5% back on the first $1500 you spend at grocery stores, Walgreens, and CVS for the first three months of the year. After reaching the $1500 threshold, you will earn 1% back.

The categories are varied and practical, but it’s hard to maximize your rewards since offers vary. In addition, having an authorized user on your account is not that great, too, because the purchase limit applies to the total purchases of the cards on your account. In other words, purchases are not individualized.

This is an excellent card if you are happy to enrol in and track bonus categories. If it is too high-maintenance, consider the Discover it Chrome Card instead. It offers 2% cash back on restaurant and gas station purchases—for up to $1000 in combined spending—and 1% cash back on general purchases.

  • Low-interest rates
  • Generous cash back bonuses
  • Flexible rewards
  • Keeping track of the rotating cash back categories can be high maintenance

  • Purchase Rate: Variable
  • Perks: Cell phone insurance; Visa Signature benefits; 0% APR in first 15 months

Best for: Card members who want rewards and low APR

The Wells Fargo Active Cash Card is one of the best cash rewards cards on the market. Card members enjoy a 0% introductory APR on purchases and qualifying balance transfers for 15 months from their account opening. With this one, you can also receive $600 in cell phone protection, claimable against damaged or stolen equipment, and subject to a deductible of $25 when using Wells Fargo Active Cash to pay your cell phone bill.

There’s also an unlimited 2% in cash rewards back on eligible purchases. And spending $1000 on your card in the first three months gets you a $200 cash rewards bonus, too. So, if you want a low-maintenance card that offers an easy way to earn cash back on all your purchases, or if you are looking for cashback rewards, this card is for you.

Wells Fargo has always been known for its generous rewards programs, and this flat-rate cash back card is no exception. Coupled with its $0 annual fee, impressive sign-up bonus, and introductory APR offer, this is a great card that offers long-and-short-term value.

Some rewards might offer a higher rate in bonus categories or higher flexibility, making it essential to weigh your individual goals and spending habits. So, before choosing a card, evaluate how and where you are most likely to shop. While this is an excellent standalone rewards card, you may also want to combine it with cards that earn rewards at higher rates in specific categories (dining, gas, travel).

The rewards here are pretty straightforward. You will earn a flat-rate 2% in cash rewards on qualifying purchases. There is no earning limit and no need to track spending or enrol in bonus categories. If you spend around $1325 a month (the average for most Americans), you earn $318 back in cash rewards, with no annual fee.

What is more, you can redeem your cash back via several channels, and there is no minimum redemption threshold. On top of that, Wells Fargo offers the Wells Fargo Go Far rewards program. You can use it to redeem rewards for gift cards, purchases, and travel. Plus, you can even use your rewards for a statement credit, direct deposit into a Wells Fargo checking or savings account, or withdraw cashback directly from your ATM in $20 increments.

If you pay off your card regularly, the Active Cash card is worth it, but if you intend to carry a balance, you will be assigned an ongoing variable APR from 14.99% to 24.99%, which is on the steep side.

The card also comes with a 3% foreign transaction fee, which means your cashback will be eclipsed by transaction fees when you are abroad. If you are planning on travelling internationally, perhaps you would want to look at a backup card.

Perks for this card are limited, but you receive Visa Signature benefits like auto-rental insurance, a pay-per-use roadside assistance service, travel and shopping protection, concierge services, and discounts on luxury car rentals. There are other benefits, too, such as extended warranties, baggage-delay insurance, and lost-baggage insurance.

  • 2% cash back on all purchases
  • Zero annual membership fees
  • $600 cell phone insurance
  • Variable APR from 14.99% to 24.99% accrued on carried balances

  • Purchase Rate: Variable
  • Perks: Low APR if you have good credit, cash back on repayments, automatic instalment plan

Best for: Revolvers that need low-interest rates to carry their balance

This card rewards cash payments and puts your balance into an instalment plan at the end of the month, making it helpful in keeping your credit card balance in check.

While the card doesn’t have a 0% introductory APR, it does come with many other features to keep your payments low, like automatic instalment plans. The card puts your balance into an instalment plan with a fixed monthly payment, which obliges you to pay off the balance within 12 to 60 months.

There is also a unique cash back rewards program that incentivizes you to repay your card, with a 1.5% cash back on purchases when you make a payment.

Additionally, you are offered a credit line with instalment terms based on your credit score by signing up for this card. You can use the card like a regular credit card, but your balance goes into an instalment plan at the end of the month. In this way, you can save thousands in interest.

The card also has a low APR rate, so if you have good credit, expect charges of 8.99% only! On the other hand, if you have a poor rating, the APR is sky-high at 29.99%. Aside from the low APR, you aren’t charged too many fees. There is no annual fee, no foreign transaction fee, and no penalty fees. But, as a downside, you can’t make balance transfers with this card. We cannot have everything, now, can we?

  • 1.5% cash back on all repayments

  • Low APR for cardholders with good credit
  • No 0% introductory APR

  • Purchase Rate: Variable
  • Perks: No fees, Discounts on events and Entertainment, and a 0% APR for 18 months

Best for: Low interest rates plus perks

The Citi Diamond Preferred card is not a rewards card, but it can help you consolidate debt, build credit and finance large purchases through competitive rates. The card offers a 0% APR for the first 18 months and 13.74-23.74% APR after that.

Moreover, there is no annual fee and premium benefits associated with other Citi cards, including Citi Entertainment and Citi Easy Deals. In addition, the card offers a low balance transfer fee of just 3% of your balance or $5, whichever is higher, along with the extended introductory APR offer. However, if you want to transfer debt, you better look at other cards with lower or no transfer fees.

It would be best if you also were wary of the card’s APR once the promotional APR ends. If you have a low credit score, the higher APR of 23.74% can be untenable. If you cannot make payment, this APR could even top the top of the range at 29.99%.

Make sure you do not revolve around your balance too long on this card, and you will do just fine with plenty of rewards to enjoy.

  • Minimal fees
  • Long introductory APR
  • Low balance transfer fees
  • APR up to 29.99% if payments are missed

Our Verdict

The Discover It Cash Back card is a real winner for us. The card has consumer-friendly terms and comes with a generous sign-up bonus. In fact, the sign-up bonus matches the amount of cash back you earn at the end of your first year of membership, too. That is much more lucrative than the usual introductory offers out there, especially with the 5% bonus category purchases. Plus, there is no limit on the 1% general purchases cashback offer, and there are no annual fees, too. As a consequence, Discover It Cash Back makes for an easy recommendation.

But, if you are not too concerned about perks and just need to get your debt lowered, the lengthy APR of Citi Diamond Preferred Card is your best bet. Likewise, if you want the lowest interest rates on the market and have a good credit record, you might not do better than the Upgrade Visa Cash Rewards card.

Best for: Traveler’s and shoppers who use their cards for many purchases

This card has numerous rewards. Fortunately, it does not come at the premium price of similar high-end rewards cards. The Chase Freedom Flex has no annual fees but a robust earning structure covering multiple expenses, including travelling, drugstore purchases, and dining. There is also a rotating quarterly bonus category that you might enjoy, too.

Like the Capital One Quicksilver Card, you earn a $200 bonus once you have spent $500 in the first three months of owning the card. You gain a 5% cash back on your grocery store purchases (excluding Walmart, Target, and Costco) up to $12,000 in your first year. There is also a 5% cash back on bonus categories (up to $1500) that change per quarter.

You can even earn 5% back on travel and 3% on dining and drugstores, with 1% made on all other purchases. However, the downside is that you have to book your trip via Ultimate Rewards (through Chase). Nevertheless, the travel rewards rate is among the best on the market.

The card has no annual fee and a fair variable APR of 14.99 to 23.74%. There is also no minimum to redeem for cash back, and rewards never expire. That is as long as your account remains open, of course. The rewards rate is generous, but cardholders should watch the rotating benefits, too, because they change every three months.

Best for: Frequent and luxury travellers who want to reduce costs and earn rewards

If you travel regularly, the World of Hyatt Credit Card by Chase offers extensive rewards on the essentials, such as airfare and dining.

Hotel loyalty programs are usually over-inflated with limited redemption offers, making it hard to determine whether or not they are worth the effort. The Hyatt Credit Card is different and offers real value for travellers, meaning you can stretch your rewards a long way.

New cardholders can receive up to 60,000 bonus points through a tiered sign-up bonus offer. You gain two bonus points on purchases in the first six months if you hit $15000 in total spending. In fact, the 60,000 points you earn after hitting the $15000 mark are worth up to $1200 in hotel nights. Moreover, earn 30,000 points for spending $3000 in the first three months and 30,000 additional bonus points via the boosted rewards rate on general purchases.

The card comes with an annual fee of $95, but there are luxury perks, including a free night at a category 1-4 hotel every year. Each free night is valued at 15,000 points. Credit cardholders who spend $15000 in a calendar year are also awarded a second free night.

Needless to say, you earn extra points when spending in Hyatt hotels. Cardholders receive 4 points for every dollar spent on Hyatt hotel purchases, and 2 points per dollar on restaurants, airfares, local transit, commuting, and gym and fitness club memberships. They also receive 1 point per dollar on everything else.

Unlike other travel cards that offer good rewards on flights and hotel stays, the World of Hyatt has perks that extend to everyday purchases, such as gym and restaurant spending. Hyatt might not have as extensive a network as other hotel chains. However, it still boasts 600 properties in over 50 countries, ranging from mid-level business travel hotels to all-inclusive resorts.

The downside of this card is that you cannot redeem your points for cash or gift cards. You will also need a minimum number of points for each redemption option. According to a fixed redemption chart and not peak pricing, saving your Hyatt points for free nights is best. In other words, you should be able to find great deals by searching for a room during busy times of the year. Contrary to other hotel chains, Hyatt does not impose blackout dates.

One of the greatest benefits is the Discoverist elite status, where cardholders enjoy premium Wi-Fi connectivity, complimentary bottled water on a day-to-day basis, room upgrades, late-night checkout, and complimentary breakfast. Cardholders with elite status also receive rental car insurance, trip cancellation insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, baggage delay insurance, purchase protection, and no foreign transaction fees.

  • Free nights and a generous points reward system
  • Travel perks and upgrades
  • Ability to earn points on everyday purchases
  • You can’t redeem your points for cash or gift cards

  • Annual Fee: $0 in the first year, $95 after that
  • Credit Limit: Not disclosed
  • Purchase Rate: Variable
  • Perks: Two Annual Passes to the United Club; generous miles on offer; $0 membership fee in the first year

Best for: Cardholders who are looking for a generous sign-up bonus

If United Airlines is your favorite airline, this card can help you get on your next flight for free. Why? Because it offers a generous sign-up bonus and an excellent earning rate!

The card offers a sign-up bonus of 60,000 miles if you spend $3000 in the first three months. And there is also an additional 10,000 miles bonus if you spend $6000 in the first six months. If you can meet that threshold, you receive $1064 in airfare. Great!

However, there is not a miles bonus on your anniversary. Even so, you earn two one-time passes to the United Club every year, valued at $100. Also, there is no annual fee in your first year. Afterwards, the annual fee becomes $95, but the anniversary bonus balances it out.

The United Club lounges provide free food and drinks, complimentary Wi-Fi, and comfortable workspaces. Earning miles is pretty simple. You earn 2 miles per dollar on directly purchased United tickets and 2 miles per dollar on hotel and restaurant spend. All other purchases earn 1 mile on the dollar.

  • You can earn miles on restaurant purchases
  • Lots of travel perks
  • Decent APR for a travel card
  • No miles bonus on your anniversary
  • Annual fee of $95 after first year

Our Verdict

Recommending a travel card without knowing your actual travel requirements and habits is a challenge. That said, the United Explorer card is the best choice if you are a frequent flyer and want to earn miles towards your next vacation. In case you are more interested in hotel stays and staycations closer to home, though, the Hyatt card is hard to beat.

  • Perks: Earn ThankYou Points on daily spending; private pass; 0% APR in the first 15 months

Best for: Everyday spending and rewards points

The Citi Rewards+ Card is a valuable rewards card for everyday shopping. The rates are as high as similar cards, and racking up ThankYou Points can be very lucrative.

Citi designed this card with the average consumer in mind, which means that you can earn great rewards on the purchases you are probably already making. There is a bonus category for gas station and supermarket purchases, and points are rounded up to the nearest ten.

At first glance, the rewards are not all that impressive compared to other rewards cards; the gas station and supermarket purchases you make will only earn 2 ThankYou Points per dollar. However, it is essential to look at the other unique features that boost your overall rewards-earning potential.

One of the card’s such features is that ThankYou Points are rounded up to the nearest ten; i.e., a $15 purchase will earn 20 points. That increases the value of the rewards with your card if you plan to shop a lot.

Your ThankYou Points will also earn you 10% back on any points you redeem, up to 100,000 points per year. You will also receive 15,000 ThankYou Points as a sign-up bonus if you spend $1000 in your first three months, redeemable for $150 in gift cards.

Redeem your ThankYou Points with travel purchases, gift cards, and merchandise. Travel is booked through the ThankYou Travel Portal or transferred at a 1:1 ratio to travel partners.

The card includes a 0% APR offer for the first 15 months of account opening and balance transfers for 15 months from your transfer date. That makes it easy to avoid interest charges if you need to pay down debt or make a large purchase you need to pay off. You have to pay a balance transfer fee of $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, though.

Citi Rewards+ comes with perks including Private Pass (access to presale tickets and VIP experiences), damage and theft protection, and an extended warranty.

  • Straightforward points system
  • Zero annual membership fees
  • Generous ThankYou Points and earning potential
  • Not the most impressive rewards

  • Representative APR: Pay Over Time options
  • Annual Fee: $250
  • Credit Limit: No preset spending limit
  • Purchase Rate: Variable
  • Perks: $120 Uber cash; $10 monthly dining credit; rewards points earned on groceries and dining

Best for: Credit card holders looking for restaurant and grocery perks

If you are a food enthusiast, this card is for you. The American Express Gold Card offers bonus points at restaurants and US supermarkets that can be used for attractive awards, such as travel bookings.

Hands-down, this card is best for consumers for customers who spend heavily on food, dining, and travel. The only thing is that it comes with a $250 annual fee. That said, many great reasons justify the card’s worth the hefty membership cost.

For starters, the Amex Gold Card offers new cardholders 60,000 reward points if they spend $4000 in the first six months on eligible purchases. It is one of the highest bonuses the card company has offered to date and is also quite generous compared to most rewards cards on the market. Cardholders can redeem these for travel bookings through American Express Travel and earn about $600 in travel perks. Points can also be transferred to partner airlines and are worth 1.55c if transferred to Delta, returning $930.

Points are earned every time you use your card. Where you use your card determines the number of points earned. The quickest way to accumulate rewards is by spending on dining or food purchases at the grocery store. Takeout and delivery generate points, too, at 4 points per dollar spent. The good news is that UberEats also falls under this category! Your spending at US supermarkets earns 4 points per dollar for your first $25000 in a calendar year, after which you get 1 point per dollar.

Sure, the food-purchase rewards are generous, but the travel rewards are not as good as those offered by other travel-focused cards. For instance, you can earn 3 points per dollar on flights booked via Amex Travel, but you won’t receive any bonus points if you book your flights via third-party travel agents. Additionally, there are no rewards for hotel bookings or rental cars.

The points that you do generate are pretty valuable when transferred to a travel partner. There are flexible options for redemption, as points don’t expire, and there is no limit to how much you can earn. However, you will be charged an excise fee of 0.06 cents for each point you transfer up to $99.

The card has a high annual fee for up to five cardholders on the same account and $35 per card on the sixth card and others. You can assign some of your purchases to Pay Over Time. Your APR is variable according to your credit score, and there is a $40 penalty for late or failed payments. Cash advances come with a $10 or 5% fee of each advance, depending on which amount is more significant.

Perks include picking your card art, no foreign transaction fees, and up to $120 in Uber cash annually to use on Uber rides or Uber Eats in the USA. On top of this, cardholders receive a 12-month complimentary UberEats Pass membership.

What is more, the card comes with a $120 dining credit ($10 per month) in statement credits when purchasing at restaurant partners, including Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Shake Shack, and Seamless, to name a few.

Travellers also enjoy baggage insurance, secondary car-rental coverage, and free room upgrades (if available) when booking a two-night stay through The Hotel Collection.

The Amex Gold Card comes with a Pay It Plan It flexible financing option, enabling cardholders to pay off small purchase amounts (less than $100) first and then split larger payments into a custom monthly payment plan for a fixed fee. Finally, there are extended warranties and purchase protection on eligible purchases made with the Gold Card, too.

  • Excellent rewards on food purchases
  • Travel perks and the ability to exchange points on flights and hotels
  • Flexible repayment options
  • High annual fees

  • Perks: Rewards on gas station and grocery store purchases; 20% on Amazon.com purchases; $100 back after $2000 purchases in first 6 months

Best for: Average spenders who are looking for rewards

The Blue Cash Everyday Card has excellent tiered rewards that can save you hundreds a year. It is tailored towards average spenders who make everyday purchases, like groceries, commuting, and gas station purchases.

Suppose you need to finance a significant amount without heavy interest. Use the Blue Cash Everyday Card and enjoy the rewards, as the card comes with a lengthy intro APR (0% in the first 15 months) on new purchases.

The reward rate is generous, considering that the Blue Cash Everyday Card has no annual fee. In fact, cardholders can earn 3% back at US supermarkets for up to $6000 per year in purchases. Once reaching this threshold, the rate drops to 1%. There’s also a 2% cash back reward at gas stations and selected US department stores, like Macy’s, Kohl’s, Nordstrom, and Sears.

To get the best bang for your buck, pair this card with a flat-rate card. This way, you can swipe strategically to maximize your cashback, especially if you frequently shop at superstores like Walmart and Target.

To obtain it, however, you need to meet a minimum threshold of $25. There is also the option of redeeming via statement credit, gift card, or merchandise purchase. All options are redeemable at a $1 per Blue Cash Reward Dollar rate.

Additional perks include car-rental insurance, purchase protection, access to presale tickets, and the Amex Pay It Plan It scheme.

As a final note, there is an intro bonus where cardholders earn 20% back on Amazon.com purchases in the first six months, up to $150. Make $100 back after you spend $2000 in the first six months, in the form of statement credits.

  • Flexible rewards on everyday purchases
  • 0% annual rate and lengthy APR
  • Introductory cash bonuses
  • Not great cash back rates

Our Verdict

Beating the Blue Cash Everyday card when it comes to low-maintenance rewards is tough, but the Citi Rewards+ rounding features push its earning potential into the lead. So, if you are willing to put in some effort and make strategic purchases, go for the Citi Rewards card.

On the other hand, if you are a frequent shopper on Amazon.com, the Prime Rewards card is by far the best choice for you, while the Amex Gold card is excellent for foodies that prefer high-end grocery shopping. Again, before deciding, evaluate your purchases and needs.

Best Debt Reduction Cards

If you want to reduce debt, you might want to look at a balance transfer card. The best balance transfer cards have long introductory APR offers from 15-20 months and a fair regular APR. This gives you some time to pay down your balance and prevent debt from spiralling out of control.

Remember to pay attention to the balance transfer fees to avoid too many fees while trying to save money, too!

Best for: Students who need lucrative rewards and forgiving payment terms

If you are a student and starting to master your finances, this is a great card. There aren’t excess fees or unaffordable interest rates to saddle you with debt. Discover it offers manageable and consumer-friendly terms.

There is no late payment fee if you miss a payment for the first time—that said, there is a $40 late payment fee after that, so keep that in mind. Likewise, there is no penalty rate either. Therefore, if you have a hard time paying bills, there won’t be a hike in your interest rate. There is also no foreign transaction fee, which is helpful when abroad.

The APR is much lower than those of other student cards at 12.99 to 21.99%, compared to the average 18% rate. There is a 0% APR for the first six months, as well.

The rewards are great for students. There is a 5% cash back bonus for cardholders when they enrol in the rotating purchase categories. That applies up to $1500 in purchases; then, it switches to a 1% rate. The purchases include gas and groceries. And you can even earn 5% back on wholesale clubs and selected streaming services from April to June, providing you have activated the Q2 bonus category.

But, no upfront sign-up bonus is offered. Instead, there is the option to double up your reward bonus and earn 10% back on gas station, grocery, restaurant, and Amazon.com purchases. On all other purchases, make 2% at the end of the year. Students can also earn a $20 statement credit for making a 3.0 GPA or higher every year for five years.

The card also offers security benefits that monitor your credit report to let you know if a card is opened in your name or if it finds your Social Security number traded on the Web. Discover it offers an instant freeze service if you lose track of the card, too, as an extra security layer.

  • Cash back earnings on gas station and grocery purchases
  • Forgiving repayment terms and APR
  • 0% annual fee
  • No upfront sign-up bonus

Best for: Individuals who like paying off their cards quickly without penalty

The Chase Slate Edge Card is essentially a balance transfer card. So, if you are looking for cards with long-term APR benefits, this one is not the best option.

The card offers a 0% Intro APR on new purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 months. After that, a variable APR applies. The APR is pretty average at 14.99 to 23.74%.

A Chase balance transfer offer at play could see you paying your debt off sooner than with other cards. If you transfer your balance in the first 60 days, you will pay a 3% balance fee. There is also a limited cash bonus of $100 when you spend $500 in your first six months.

Cardholders are automatically considered for a 2% APR reduction each year when paying on time and spending $1000 by the following account anniversary. There is no annual fee.

If you opt for this card, you will be eligible for a higher limit if you spend $500 in the first six months and make timely payments, too.

Chase has several digital credit tools accessible online. Credit Journey helps you keep an eye on your credit score, while My Chase Plan lets you split up the cost of a purchase to pay it off over time.

Best for: Reducing Debt and Fees

This card offers one of the most extended APRs and no annual fees. The downside is that there is a balance transfer fee of 3% ($5 min) on each transfer you make and there are very few rewards. Nevertheless, the savings on interest can make this worth your time.

The company offers a 0% APR on purchase and balance transfers for 20 billing cycles, whereafter, a variable APR kicks in from 14.49%. Unfortunately, there is a foreign transaction fee of 2% on foreign purchase transactions or ATM advance transactions in dollars and 3% on the same transactions in a foreign currency There are also no welcome bonuses.

As previously mentioned, there is no annual fee, and cardholders can choose a payment due date that fits their schedule. Some welcomed perks for cellphone users include $600 protection on your phone, subject to a deductible of $25.

Best for: Balance Transfers and paying off big purchases.

This card has a long introductory APR that lasts 18 billing cycles. A 3% fee (with a minimum of $10) applies to balance transfers, but no annual fee and no penalty APR means that paying late won’t push your APR through the roof. In fact, the APR remains low for quite some time at 12.99-22.99%.

You can also access your FICO score for free via your mobile banking app, which is appreciated.

If you transfer a balance within the first 60 days of opening your account, you enjoy 18 months of 0% APR. That also applies to purchasing APRs, so making a large purchase on this credit card seems sensible.

  • Long 0% APR offer for 18 months

  • APR up to 22.99%

Our Verdict

If you are more concerned with paying down existing debt than earning lucrative awards, BankAmericard and U.S. Bank Visa Platinum Card are our favorite choices. Of the two, BankAmericard has a more competitive APR. Yet, we cannot recommend either of these if you are planning to carry the balance.

Use both cards to lower your debts first, then switch to one of the lower interest cards for your everyday purchases.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Are the Different Types of Credit Cards?

Each credit card comes with benefits and disadvantages. Student cards are geared towards students and may have lower credit limits but more accessible payment terms. Cash back cards will reward you with points at a flat rate depending on your spending. There are rewards specifically for dining, travel, or everyday expenses. Some cards offer a sign-up bonus, some waive their annual fee, and others have no perks but have a competitive APR.

There are lots of different cards to choose from, but which type is right for you? It depends on your usage requirements.

If You’re Looking to Make Purchases

If you intend to use your card for everyday purchases or plan to make a large purchase and pay it off over time, you should look for a card with a low APR or an introductory 0% APR. If you make regular monthly purchases, find a card with the best rewards. Some cards offer generous cash back rebates on grocery and gas purchases; others are more specialized.

If You Want to Consolidate Your Debt

If your goal is to transfer a balance and consolidate debt, you must look for a low-interest rate or a low introductory rate. The best card for consolidation is one that comes with a 0% initial APR period, during which you can work on paying off your balance without gaining more interest. You should also make sure the balance transfer penalties are not unrealistically high.

If You Need Cash In Your Bank Account

If you need to have cash in your account, always look for cards with a cashback rebate. Most straightforward cards allow you to earn up to 2% back, while others offer extra bonuses. At the end of the day, your shopping behaviour determines how much cash you ultimately get out of a rewards card, so be strategic when you choose.

If You Want to Earn Rewards

If your card will see frequent usage and you want a decent reward from it, look for a card with a large credit limit and tangible rewards. Decide which bonuses will mean the most to you. Do you prefer free flights or free hotel stays? Perhaps, gift cards are a better choice? There are various rewards out there, so check the minimum redemption requirements and options on offer.

If You Want to Build Your Credit Score

If you want to boost your credit score, you should aim to pay the bill in full every month. The interest rate does not matter if you make the entire payment each month, so look for a card with no annual fee and a more extended payment period. Paying your bills on time and in full is the best way to establish your credit score.

How to Find the Best Credit Card in the Us

When looking for a US credit card, your best bet is to consider how you will use it.

Always start by looking at the interest rate as it appears as the APR or annual percentage rate. It is going to be fixed or variable, tied to the prime rate and your creditworthiness. With a fixed rate, you always know what the interest rate will be. A variable-rate card can fluctuate. A fixed-rate card can change, i.e., if you go over your limit or skip a payment. Card companies will also change their APR from time to time.

APR matters if you carry the balance. Remember that. If you pay your statement in full, you can avoid interest entirely.

It would also help if you looked out for other charges, including balance transfer fees, cash advance fees, limit change fees, and penalties for late payments. If you are trying to reduce your debt, look for introductory offers with no balance transfer fees and 0% APR for at least a year.

And do not forget that circumstances can change at any time. You may intend to pay your balance in full every month, but emergencies may crop up.

If you are looking for a rewards card to earn back points or miles on purchases, look at your current behaviour. The best rewards are generated on regular purchases and can be redeemed for items or perks that you value.

What Are the Benefits of Using a Credit Card?

There are several benefits to having a credit card, including:

  • The opportunity to build up credit will impact your ability to get a mortgage or loan in the future;
  • You can earn miles or cash by using your card;
  • You will receive your credit score information for free;
  • You will be able to increase your buying power;
  • You can put rental cars and hotel rooms on hold when you travel;
  • You’re able to make purchases immediately and put off the actual cost until you can settle it;
  • You can spread out the cost of a large purchase or emergency over several months;
  • You can decrease liabilities by transferring all your debts to a credit card and also reduce interest payments.

What Are the Disadvantages of Using a Credit Card?

As with any form of credit, there are some disadvantages to using a credit card, including:

  • Getting stuck with debt. If you cannot pay back what you are borrowing, debt will pile up, leading to bad credit and high-interest rates. Always make sure you aren’t taking on more debt than you can handle.
  • Extra fees may apply to your credit card, and if you miss a payment or exceed your limit, you receive penalties. You do not want that.
  • Credit card providers may charge you for free actions with a debit card, like drawing cash from an ATM.

What Should You Consider When You Compare Credit Cards?

When you are comparing credit cards, always look at the following factors.

The APR

If you do not pay the entire balance every month, this is the cost of borrowing your card. It would be best if you opted for the cheapest APR, fees, and charges.

The Minimum Repayment Amount

If you do not pay the entire balance of your credit card at the end of the month, you should repay the minimum amount. Usually, it is around 3%, but it varies.

Annual Membership Fees

Some cards will charge an annual membership fee, especially travel rewards cards. It is added to the amount due, and you will be charged interest on the fee if it’s not paid in full.

Penalties and Charges

Your credit agreement will highlight the charges applicable to the card, including penalties for exceeding the credit limit, using the card internationally, or late payment charges.

Introductory Offers

Some cards offer a 0% APR rate for several months or introductory rewards. Others have excellent balance transfer rates in the first few months. These offers can be invaluable, depending on your goals.

Tips on How to Manage Your Credit Card Debt

If you find yourself in over your head with credit card debt, you should devise a plan to pay back what you owe. You definitely don’t want to be stuck paying lifelong interest on your cards. There are three strategies you can try.

The Snowball Method

This strategy is designed for quick wins to motivate you to get out of debt. Start by paying off the smallest debt you have first. Once the debt is gone, you snowball the money used to pay the remaining debt in your next smallest debt. Keep doing this until you pay it off.

The Avalanche Method

If you have numerous cards, this method first sees you pay off your debt with the highest interest rate while making minimum payments on all your other debt.

The Do What You Can Method

If you need some motivation, pay off one or two low-balance credit cards, then switch to the one with the highest interest rate or vice versa. This is a way of finding what works for you as an individual.

Whichever method you choose, you are still paying off debt!

What Is APR?

Your APR is your annual percentage rate. This refers to the interest applied to your account during the billing cycle.

Can I Get a Joint Credit Card?

Not many banks offer joint credit cards, but you can try your luck at the Bank of America, US Bank, and PNC. This option enables two account owners to use the same credit account with the same rights and joint responsibility for repayment.

The creditworthiness of both parties will be evaluated when you apply.

Can I Withdraw an Application for a Credit Card?

It may be possible to cancel your application, but you have to act very quickly. Call the customer service line of the credit issuer. If you haven’t been accepted yet, they may be able to issue a cancellation. Approval usually only takes a few minutes, but you might have a shot if you are under review.

What Happens if Your Credit Card Application Is Rejected?

Rejection is never a good sign. If your application is rejected, avoid rushing off and applying for a different card. Rejections are recorded on your credit report, and any additional applications may increase the odds of you being declined again. If your card application is rejected, find out why. Then you can improve your odds of approval.

What Happens if You Miss a Repayment?

Your missed payments will be recorded on your credit report and could impact your credit score. If you keep missing payments, you may even find yourself handed over to a debt collection agency. Most credit companies will also impose a penalty on late payments.

How Do I Check My Credit Score?

Your credit score will play a deciding role in the card you qualify for. In general, you will need a score of 700 or higher if you want a card with sign-up bonuses or a low APR. You can check your score in several ways, but not all of them are free.

If you already have a credit card, you can probably check your FICO score for free from your online account. You can request a free copy per year of your credit report at AnnualCreditReport.com, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

Can I Apply for a Starter Card?

Starter cards are designed for people with a limited credit history or no experience with credit. That helps you build a positive credit history, providing you pay the card every month.

Remember that even if you are 18 years old, you must have proof of income or employment to apply for a starter card. However, if you are 21 and older, you do not need anything, but providing information about your income source might increase your starter card application approval.
